AI in Schools

Across California, schools are rushing to “implement AI” with plans that sound impressive: AI-generated lesson plans, automated grading, reading and writing “assistants,” and AI bots that give students instant feedback on essays. District webinars proudly walk through implementation plans focused on productivity, policy templates, and time-saving tools for staff.

Under pressure to “keep up,” many schools quietly adopt a model in which AI does more and the student’s mind does less. Students are told to paste prompts into chatbots to get outlines, examples, and even full paragraphs. Some districts already report AI cheating “off the charts,” with students using AI to complete entire assignments.

This approach has a hidden cost. When AI is routinely used to answer questions, compose essays, and organize thinking, students are trained into an anti-conceptual mode: short attention spans, dependence on instant answers, and a weakening of the very conceptual faculty that education is supposed to develop. Instead of learning how to think, they learn how to prompt.

Cambrian Academy’s Philosophy of Education starts from a radically different premise: Education is the deliberate training of the mind to live in reality, by developing the capacity to form concepts, integrate knowledge, and think independently.

That foundation leads to a very different AI strategy. At Cambrian Academy:

• AI may help generate examples, but students must do the actual thinking, comparing, and explaining in their own words.
• AI may support research, but students must verify facts and integrate them conceptually.
• Major writing is done in-class or by hand first; AI can be used later as a tool for revision, not as a substitute for thought.

Rather than allowing AI to bypass the brain, Cambrian Academy uses AI to support the brain’s work: asking better questions, seeing patterns, and deepening understanding. In a world where many schools are unintentionally training dependence on machines, Cambrian is intentionally training independent, conceptual thinkers.
