Technologies such as cell phones made it tougher to catch, but with a live teacher in the room paying attention, it can still be caught. Remote Learning on platforms such as Google MEET and Zoom are live, and some students think they can be playing around or cheating on tests without the teacher seeing it. But an excellent teacher can tell!
Online classes, taken alone at home, without qualified supervision, are easy to cheat. Many online courses are self-paced and unsupervised.
College admissions people know this. If your child applies to college and presents a transcript from an "online high school" it may simply be tossed out. Colleges are under no obligation to tell you why they have declined an application. You may never know if that were the reason.

Don't have time to do the work for your online class? It is very easy to find someone online who will blast through it for you, and it doesn't cost very much. Is cost no object? There are schools that can be easily bribed to provide a transcript showing that the classes were passed with A's. Need an extra layer of "proof" for your fraud? The same schools will have one of their staff submit all the work so it looks as if the student really did it. (One we busted had forgotten to remove the staff member's email address from the online student profile.) Don't have time to write a paper and want to pass an automated plagiarism check? There are people who will write it for you.
