Common Core | Why we don't do it

Decades of experience has shown that each new education fad has resulted in more confusion and less solid, conceptual learning. "Whole Language" ruined literacy. Each variation of revisionist history destroyed some of the most important cause and effect links, which is what the study of history is supposed to be all about. How can it make sense with all those gaps?

The most insidious sham of all is Common Core math, a curriculum that not only leaves math concepts a fuzzy mystery, but impairs reasoning and logic as well.

READ THE STANDARDS - The attempt to insert Real World and Cross-curricular lessons and examples might look like a good idea--from an adult point of view. However, many are thrown in without regard for how concepts form in a child's mind. To make things worse, it seems that teachers have not received enough training to make sense of it themselves. [link to CA Common Core] On first glance, it may appear that the curriculum integrates valuable "real-world" connections and provides cross-curricular links. However, in an actual classroom, the syllabus is rarely completed in a school year.
SIMPLY ASK - Go through the standards of the previous year with your child, and ask what he or she learned about each one and how it tied into others. You may be surprised by how much is actually not covered in the real-life classroom. Look at this year's standards and at any point in the year, ask the teacher about what has been completed and what will be skipped.
PROVEN IN OUR SUMMER SESSIONS - We believe that a good foundation in math is critical to future success. We understand that not all families can afford year-round private school. That is why we run our highly discounted summer math program. Students who are stuck in a school that uses Common Core need to take IM1, IM2, or IM3 if they want to skip ahead a year at their school. We offer these three classes in the summer so students can get the credit and the transcript expected by their school. However, once the Common Core class is completed, we help the students also finish the 14% of Algebra that is left out of IM1, the 12% of Geometry that is left out of IM2, and the 16% of Algebra and Trigonometry that is left out of IM3.
